Credit Card Surcharge

It appears that we are given an option to add a surcharge to memberships which are paid via credit card transaction on the Data Entry>Settings>Payment&Billing options. If this box is checked will the surcharge be applied to all credit card transactions processed through RGP/X-charge......or will this only apply the surcharge to the recurring membership dues.

  • Does the credit card surcharge work with Stripe and the Online calendar/ booking system? We are negotiating pricing with Stripe and debit cards are much cheaper to process than Credit cards. So we will take both but would like to add a surcharge if the customer chooses to use CC.

I understand from Stripe that this can be done: "You can definitely do that with Stripe. We tell you the card type when you send it to us (but before you actually make the transaction). So you would collect the card details, calculate the surcharge, then present to the user for final confirmation before submitting the full amount to us for processing."

    Thanks

  • Sorry, but online credit card surchages are not supported. It's a good idea though :)

Although Stripe may support surcharges at their API level, this would require a significant change on RGP's side to support these surchages since the price of the booking would change AFTER the credit card was submitted (which is not how the system is currently designed). And then this surcharge would need to be carried through all the way into the transaction download for tracking. It would be a mammoth undertaking to support.

As for debit online, I'm not sure what you are referring to. Traditional debit cards (requiring a PIN) are never entered online at any site. If you are referring to Visa/MC style debit cards then those behave just like credit cards (and RGP gets VISA or MC returned from Stripe, not any indication of a debit card).

A reminder that Stripe is a full-stack processor and you will NOT also be paying your existing merchant fees. This typically means the price differential should be relatively small (like less than $1 per every $100 booked).

    Hope this helps

  • Hi Andy - thanks for the quick response. I had a feeling it might be quite complex, its typically something we see with big operators (eg airlines etc) but less so with small ones.

This may be a UK vs US thing but in the UK all debit cards are linked to either Visa debit, MC debit, Visa Electron or Maestro and double as a bank ATM card (http://www.theukcardsassociation.org.uk/individual/types_debit_card.asp). Customers can use either a DC or CC for all payments, they are interchangeable and operate in the same way, ie they both have a long code on the front, CVS number on the back and chip and pin (of course the chip and pin is irrelevant for online), and both can be used online and at local credit card terminals.

It would be a great feature, though, and would have a material impact on processing costs at least for the UK (most people pay with a DC if there is a CC surcharge). Stripe has offered me some great rates for DC, ok for CC - the difference is over 1% - hence the question! If it is something that you can consider for the future we would be grateful.

    Regards, Steve

  • Steve,

We have the same type of debit cards in the U.S (except for the chip-and-pin part... coming soon to the U.S.!

If the debit cards function as credit cards, then no change should be needed on my part and you should be able to enjoy the lower rates as Stripe just detects the card as normal and processes it.

Please confirm with Stripe, and let me know
