Error HY000--Can't connect mySQL server (10060)
Came into work--the staff noted that our 2nd and 3rd computers weren't working. Computer one seems fine. Got the error message as described above. Nothing different done at close or open to trigger it. All computers can connect to the internet. Have emailed our network guy but no response yet. Search revealed nothing. We are using (sigh) Windows 8. Our computers are less than a year old.

This is a timeout error. The computers not working are timing out connecting to your local MySQL server. I'd investigate your LAN networking. Do those computers share the same network hub?
Alternately your MySQL server might not be letting them connect in a timely manner. Do you have a firewall running on your MySQL server? Try disabling it.
Bottom line - this is a connection error between those two computers and the server.
Could it be the dreaded reverse dns issue ?
Perhaps, but only it only effect 2 of 3 machines.
