Bar codes containing non-leading letters

Hey Andy,

I'm interested in working letters into our bar codes to avoid adding additional digits. I know that the barcodes can't start with a letter, but is there an issue with having a letter in the middle or end of the code? I've done some tests and codes like 001A, 001B, 001C, et. seem to work fine. Am I missing anything?

In case you're wondering, I want to avoid adding digits for two reasons. The first is that sometimes five digit barcodes only partially scan if we're moving quickly. This can result in the wrong customer being checked in. The second is that many of our members say their code out loud if there's a line at the counter. It's easier to memorize and recite fewer digits as opposed to more.

Anyway, let me know.

Thanks!
