Importing iCal feeds into the new RGP booking system

The new RGP booking system allows you to import iCal feeds to overlay on the calendar displayed to staff. Some examples of uses might be iCal feeds published from shift planning services.

The iCal feed is performed via a third party component that we have no control over and therefore I'm using this forum post to outline some common issues with their code :/

* Large iCal feeds (with recurring events going back or forward for years) will inevitably fail and cause cryptic error messages. Keep the feeds being imported reasonably sized. Unfortunately, infinite recurring events produce... infinite events.... and it can easily overwhelm the import.
* If you do have recurring events on a Google Calendar that you are importing as an iCal feed into RGP... be aware that if you change the start/end time of a particular instance of the recurring series in Google Calendar, you will get two events with the OLD and NEW times in RGP. This is a bug on Google's side. To work around this bug, delete the specific event instance on Google Calendar and create a new event for the custom time on Google's side.

  • Another issue has appeared.

Google Calendar recently changed the way they are exporting ical feeds and recurring events are appearing off by one hour in RGP. Unfortunately this bug is occurring in third party code (i.e. not code within RGP but code in a licensed library) and we have no control over it. A ticket has been posted to the third party code providers but it may be months before they fixed it.

At this time we can only recommend not using recurring events within your Google Calendar.
