It would be really useful to scan other data than numbers to customers card# field. In Finland we have barcodes in drivers licenses and social security cards. Customers carry these cards always with them. Line code is normal code 39 and data is in format: ######+###X where X is number or letter. It's also unique because the data is customers social security number.

It's waste of money and plastic to give out cards when people have so many cards already. Nobody hardly looses their drivers license but extra gym cards etc can easily be lost.
