Biometric Check In's

I thought I'd share a product that I'm currently testing with RGP. We have been toying with the idea of using fingerprints to check in our customers for years and part of moving our facilities over to RGP, I was also asked to look into Biometrics.

Well I wanted a product that would work with RGP without having to modify RGP. I found one. Using a Digital Persona fingerprint scanner and Scan and Pin's software we are now checking our customer's into RGP using a finger/fingers of their choosing. With this they don't need to worry about their membership cards, they just scan their finger and RGP checks them in like normal.

Check out www.scanandpin.com for more details. I'll post more as I do further testing but so far it has worked great.

  • How is this working for you? I am definitely interested in this as I would like to implement self check-in by customers, but the idea of not spending money on member cards that will get lost and doing fingerprint makes a lot of sense.

How does the customer setup work? Easy?

How is the reliability? Customer reaction?

    Thank you!

  • In way of an FYI:

My Laptop also has biometric login (And I love it.. no more passwords) However, after a session at the gym I've found that the biometric reader on the laptop no longer recognizes my finger prints.

I'd guess this isn't a problem if members are scanning their finger prints at the beginning of a climbing session.... but it *may* not work after or during a session should a member need to scan again.

Let me know what you're findings are since the idea of not having/buying membership cards is very appealing.

    Thanks,
    Nigel.

  • In Tampere - Finland we have a fittness center that has also a small climbing area. They have biometric login and it works really good for fittness customers and for occasional climbers but for people who come often and climb more it's a big problem because their finger prints are not recognized. Biometric login is a great idea but I'm not so sure how it works for a gym dedicated for climbing. Maybe it's possible to scan all the fingers and then use the pinkie for identification but it might be that some users have to go through all their fingers before they get in!

    What about iris detection? :)

    Cheers,

  • So far we have had a good response from people on the system. Most are excited to try it out.

It is very easy to setup a customer in it, simply run the Add New User wizard. You select a profile that you have already created. Then you give the user a member id number. Then you scan their finger or fingers.

After their finger is set up, you go into RGP. Edit the customer, select member id. Have the customer scan their finger one last time, this puts their member id in just like when you scan in the barcode on a card. Click ok and you are all done.

In regards to how reliable it is with climber fingers. This is the part we are testing. You can select the number of points the scanner must find on a finger to log in a person. We started off with a higher number, the scanner worked on most climbers but had issues with the guys that are in here every day, so we bumped down the number of points. So far so good.

I'll keep everyone posted on this. Feel free to ask questions.

  • hmmm, so the morale of the story is: if you are going to commit a crime, either climb frequently or wear gloves :)

  • I recently found a company that sells an ultrasonic scanner capable of penetrating oils, dirt and other things that interfere with optical scanners. How flexible is RGP with outside input (scanners and such)?

  • The device needs to be keyboard emulating and produce a number. If it can do that, it can work with RGP.

I do know the fingerprint solution mentioned by Nick above is working.
