Booking events more than 26 weeks in advance
Just tested this and it seems that past 26 weeks on the calendar, the events are not pre-built but they are still reserving resources. So if I want to add a custom event 30 weeks in advance, even though no event is built yet on that day, I can't add the custom event due to resource conflict.
What's the best way around this ?

That is sort of by design because in theory that resource IS reserved... just for performance reasons the calendar limits building recurring events more than 26 weeks in advance.
You could look out ahead in Manage Calendar, exclude the specific recurring instance (right mouse click on the slot), and then schedule your custom event - at least I think that will work.
