  • I'm not clear on your question... as you seem to describe two things.. 1) a deposit or 2) gift cards

If you want to give a customer money, sell them a gift card through POS.

For deposits, here is the best way to handle it (using a party as an example)

    Create a "Birthday Party" Product
Create a "Birthday Party Deposit" Product

When they pay the deposit, sell them the "Deposit" product ($50 for example)
When they actually attend the party and want to pay for the whole thing, sell them the "Birthday Party" product ($200) and RETURN the "Deposit" product in the transaction.

The balance due will then be $150 which you'll collect. The Birthday party account will have received $200, and the deposit account will have been zeroed out.

  • what if using just a generic "gift card" product and in Andys example
    - first sell "gift card" product for $50
    - then at the end sell party for $200 and return gift card for $50

this way it's easier to see form the products admin sales if there's still gift cards to be used.

is there any issues with that approach?

  • We have been using gift cards as deposits and it has been working out great. What we do is schedule events in a calendar and then when we receive money for a deposit we create a code that goes into the event in the calendar for later use. As long as the codes are single use, everything works great.
