Punching Through the Firewall

(This was going to be a direct e-mail, but I figured the public could use the knowledge.)

I didn't set up our network, and I don't know how RGP remote workstations gain access to the server. Recently the remote workstations lost the ability to run RGP (ODBC driver error-the number 10600 is at the end of the Windows error; the RGP error is "Unable to connect to database! Make sure...powered on..."). I can restore the ability to run RGP by turning off the firewall on the server.

So, what must I enable on the server firewall settings in order to allow access to RGP by remote computers?

Thanks,
Matt

  • Hi Matt -

MySQL works via port 3306, so if you want your workstations to connect then port 3306 needs to be available on your server. I assume your entire network is behind a firewall/router so opening JUST that port shouldn't be a security risk.

Did something change on your server to enable the firewall? i.e. if that port was always blocked, then the workstations should never have worked.

Another thing to watch out for is connecting to your server via IP address and using DHCP. If you connect via the IP address, make sure your server has a fixed IP.

I hope this helps/answers your question.

  • We connect via computer name.

Someone must have changed the firewall settings. I enabled port 3306 on the server firewall and it now works.

    Thanks,
    Matt
