Customized permissions
It would be nice to customize the employee permission levels.
I would like to give certain employees access to certain reports.
I have an employee that handles our inventory but I don't want to make them a manager.
We use the 'customer notes' report quite a bit for customer actions.
I would like to give all my employees access to that one. (etc...)

Would it be possible for your staff to use the Advance Search function in Data entry, and search notes with a key word?

I make a mistake to use this function, you have to have manager access, as well. Sorry for the mistake.
As Amy mentions, you can go to Data Entry -> Adv Search and in the bottom, right is an option to search notes.
As for managing retail - the power staff level can manage retail.
