check in using smart phone

Hey Andy and Amy, I know you are super busy with the online booking, etc and we are looking forward to it as it sounds great. I had an idea about being able to check in using a smart phone with a QR code, like an airline e-ticket or the e-subcard at Subway.

Could a QR code reader be used instead of the barcode scanner to generate customer barcodes? Then an app would be needed for the customer to store their unique QR code. It would eliminate the need to print membership cards.

I am still doing some research on how it all works for the airlines and Subway. I'll post some links if I find some, but I thought you might be interested in looking into it as well.

Cheers,
Clay

  • Hi Clay,

We don't have any short term plans to offer this... as I recall, barcode scanners that can read an phone screen are prohibitively expensive as well. Additionally, many folks don't bring their phone into the gym with them in the U.S. for security reasons (i.e. it'll get stolen!). In the U.S., people get the membership cards printed in bulk quite cheaply - perhaps as low as $0.20 per card...

    Cheers

  • We have a usb numeric keypad sitting next to the barcode reader. The customer can type their member number in to check in. We also let people pick their own member number.

  • Thanks Andy,

I figured the price of the scanner could be prohibitive, but worth a look. Interesting that people there do not take their phone to the gym. I thought they didn't go anywhere with out them now. ha ha

Most of our customers bring their phone, but not all have a smart phone. I was just thinking of way to not have to hand out membership card.

    Cheers,

  • aroccos, I did that in a former gym, but the chalk soon killed the key pad. Works well though while the key pad works.

  • After doing some research, this could be done easily now. There are several apps that let you scan your membership cards or discount cards and they say most barcode readers can read your phone. So you could use one of them and your current barcode reader if it reads off a phone.

You would just have to generate barcodes, which can be done online or through an add on in excel. Then let your customer scan or take a pic of the barcode with his or her phone.
